.
I recorded this song in 2019. During this time, I listened a lot to the style of JJ Cale and B.B King. My blues skill was pretty weak and immature, and I could not afford to record a song and call it blues, even if it sounds like blues to me.
The term “like” to me is unequivocally not! I started consuming new lessons that would teach me B.B King’s playing style, and I started rehearsing his famous songs. Several teachers explained the techniques he uses and his famous licks.
I could not afford to rehearse his songs and style and record a new song that would sound in the style of music he plays. I felt it might be like copying or indicate a lack of creativity. B.B King already has this style identified with him. Why would someone want to hear an “imitator” who does not yet know how to play.
I spent long hours studying his style and practiced on it for a few hours every day. It opened me up to creating my own blues pieces. When I was learning his blues techniques, I did not record songs and was looking to create a blues that would sound local.
After a few months, having already bought recording equipment and recording a few songs, I noticed that my playing style is somehow influenced by JJ Cale.
It was bizarre because I listened to his songs, but I did not learn his songs. I was focused on the blues style of B.B King. I did not understand why my songs are reminiscent of JJ cale’s style.
Suddenly I was reminded of an interview with one of the most talented musicians in Israel who said that if you want to improve your musical skill, passive listening can also enhance your talent even if you do not learn or practice that style of playing.
I could not give up on creating a blues song. Still, I was very scared of “JJ Cale” syndrome, meaning I was afraid to make a new blues that would sound like B.B King.
I wanted to be unique and create something in an original performance with my interpretation. Before I recorded the song “Black Jack,” I had a general direction for the blues form and the special lick I used to identify with the song and make it blues.
I honestly do not know if this song sounds bluesy, even though I cataloged it as blues. Maybe my passion for blues does not rise on a par with what real blues should be.
I leave that to your judgment.
